The petroleum technology development fund (PTDF) awards two types of scholarships which we are going to elaborate more in this article.

  • The Overseas Scholarship Scheme
  • The Local Scholarship Scheme

1) The Overseas Scholarship Scheme (OSS)

This scholarship scheme is designed primarily to meet  the human capacity requirements of the oil and gas industry through the training of young Nigerians in oil and gas-related fields of the following:

  • Engineering
  • Geology
  • Environmental Studies
  • Sciences
  • Management
  • Law
  • Accounting
  • Renewable Energy
  • Information technology

And other offshore-related courses in the top-rated universities around the world, to facilitate knowledge transfer. The study centers for the scholarship awards are universities in the United Kingdom, China, Germany, France, and the United States.

This particular scholarship scheme is an annual program and those that can partake in this are those in MSc and PhD studies.

Overseas Scholarship Scheme Requirements

— For MSc

  1. A minimum of second class upper (2.1) qualification in their first degree or second class lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience
  2. Applicant must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
  3. Must possess 5 O’level credits including the English language
  4. Must be computer literate

— For PhD

  1. A minimum of second class lower (2.2) in their first degree and a good second-degree certificate
  2. Must have completed the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
  3. Must be a computer literate
  4. Must submit a research proposal relevant to the Oil and Gas industry (of not more than 5 pages) to include: Topic, introduction, objective, methodology, and mode of data collection
  5. Applicants must also include their master’s degree project

2) The Local Scholarship Scheme (LSS)

The local Scholarship scheme runs in Twenty-five (25) universities in Nigeria and four (4) centers of excellence. Those that this scheme is beneficiary to are the students offering Oil and gas related courses. The Local Scholarship Scheme is made up of Undergraduate, Masters, Ph.D. scholarship award

Local Scholarship Scheme Requirements

The following are the requirement a scholar must meet in order to apply.

— For Undergraduate.

  • Applicant must be a full-time student in any of the federal universities in Nigeria
  • Must be in their second year of study
  • The course of study should be related to the oil and gas industry
  • Applicant must possess five (5) credits in WAEC/NECO/SSCE including English and mathematics
  • Applicant must possess a minimum of cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5 on a scale of 5 or 3.0 on a scale of 4 which is equivalent to 2.1 in their first year.

— For MSc

  • Applicant must posses of a full-time admission letter into any of the federal universities
  • Must possess at least five (5) credits in WAEC/NECO/SSCE Results
  • National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of Exemption
  • Letter of admission into the university
  • Academic transcript
  • A minimum of the second class upper (2.1) in oil and gas-related field or a 2.2 with a minimum working experience of 2years in the oil and gas industry
  • Evidence of state of origin and local government
  • Personal statement of a minimum of one thousand words stating reasons for undertaking the course of study

— For PhD

  • Applicant must posses of a full-time admission letter into any of the federal universities
  • Must possess at least five (5) credits in WAEC/NECO/SSCE Results
  • National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate or Letter of Exemption
  • Academic transcripts
  • Evidence of state of origin and local government
  • Valid admission letter of not more than one year
  • Research area must be relevant to the oil and gas industry
  • A minimum of 2.2 in their first degree and a minimum of merit as a second-degree certificate in an oil and gas-related discipline.
  • PhD research proposal of not more than 6 pages to include the topic, introduction, literature review, research question(s), novelty, methodology, mode of data collection(s), expected outcome(s), relevance to the industry and appropriate references.

PTDF Scholarship Portal

The petroleum technology development fund (PTDF) website for any information is accessible when you go through its official page which is www.ptdf.gov.ng. But you can also visit www.scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng to apply for the scholarship program.

Before you can apply for the scholarship scheme on PTDF, you will first have to create an account and the basic steps to take has been given below:

STEP ONE – PTDF Official Website

  • Visit PTDF scholarship page at www.scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng and click on “Create Applicant Account” on the pagePTDF Scholarship Application Online From www.scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng Portal
  • Fill in the required details to proceed. You will be sent an email with instructions on how to log in and set your password (just make sure you enter a valid email address)

STEP TWO – Sign In To Start Application

  • Go to www.scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng and click on “login with existing account”
  • Under Username, enter your email address as your username and the password you created following the instruction from your email
  • Then click on sign in.

STEP THREE – Start Application

  • On the dashboard, click on “New Application” at the top right side of the page
  • Fill all the fields in the section. Have it in mind that passport photo (jpg or png) and ID (pdf) should not be more than 100KB

STEP FOUR – Add Your Academic Qualification

  • Click on “Add Academic Qualification” and choose to add qualification (O’level, First Degree, or Masters Degree). For applicants with two sittings in O’level, after filling the first result, you can add another O’level qualification. NOTE: for MSc Applications, your BSc transcript is not a required field.
  • Click on Next and on the next page, Enter the course information and click Next

STEP FIVE – Additional Uploads/Preferences

  • Upload your NYSC, LGA Identification and Birth Certificate in PDF and click Next. The PDF size should be less than 300KB
  • On the next page, click on Add awards and publications at the top right corner of the page
  • Click on Preview/Confirm when you are done.
  • Go through the application to make sure there are no mistakes before final submission
  • Once you have submitted your application, kindly print the slip.
